Anyone can develop a TMJ disorder, and unfortunately, that includes your child. If your little one is suffering from this condition, it could be causing them serious discomfort; as such, you will naturally want to help them find relief by having the issue treated as promptly as possible. But how will you know if your child has TMJ disorder? Here’s a brief overview of the condition and the warning signs you should keep an eye out for.

What is TMJ Disorder, and What Can Cause It?

A TMJ disorder is an issue involving the temporomandibular joints (TMJs) located on either side of the head just in front of the ears. The TMJs are responsible for moving the lower jaw whenever your child speaks or chews their food. But if the TMJs are overworked or injured, it can lead to problems.

In children, TMJ disorder is often a side effect, which is a condition that causes unconscious grinding and clenching of the teeth. When left alone for too long, bruxism can put excessive amounts of pressure on the jaw joints. Other risk factors for childhood TMJ disorder include stress, bite problems, and physical trauma involving the jaw or face.

What are the Symptoms of TMJ Disorder in Children?

If your child has a TMJ disorder, they may complain about the following symptoms:

  • Pain in the jaw, ear, neck, or shoulders that won’t go away.
  • Discomfort that grows worse while chewing or talking.
  • A clicking or popping sound that occurs when moving the jaw.
  • Frequent headaches.
  • Having trouble chewing.
  • Occasional locking of the jaw.

As soon as your child reports any symptoms that could potentially point toward a TMJ disorder, you should schedule an appointment with their dentist. They’ll be able to properly diagnose the issue and help you determine the best steps to address it.

How Can TMJ Disorder Be Treated in Children?

Treatment for childhood TMJ disorder can vary depending on the situation. In some cases, your child may just need to rest their jaw for a couple of days. It can also be beneficial to switch them to a diet of soft foods that don’t require as much chewing. On top of that, you may need to help your child break any habits that might be contributing to TMJ problems, such as chewing gum.

Depending on the severity and underlying cause of the condition, your dentist may give your child an occlusal splint. This is a special oral appliance that is meant to be worn over the teeth at night. An occlusal splint can move the lower jaw slightly forward, which gives the TMJs a chance to recover. The appliance also keeps the upper and lower rows of teeth separated, thus reducing bruxism symptoms and alleviating strain on the jaw joints.

As a parent, it’s important to be able to recognize the warning signs of a TMJ disorder. When you know what symptoms to keep an eye out for, it puts you in a better position to act quickly to get your child the care they need in order to enjoy lasting relief.
